Social and Historical Context - Wider Reading. DEADLINE MONDAY 17th NOVEMBER

You need to read a book which is set during the Second World War (1939-1945) and refers to life on the Home Front. Post a comment to show what your book has taught you about this period in history. Please include:

Author, title and basic plot summary (2-3 sentences)
Details of what the book revealed to you about
  • behaviour
  • relationships
  • attitudes

in the 1930s and 1940s and how these are different to 2008. Be specific, giving a short quote to help others understand your observations.

For bonus points, could you also comment on how the book is narrated, as this is a common theme in our study of "Spies". First person or third person? Tense? Structure?

Here's an example. In the clips we watched from "The Remains Of The Day" and "Atonement" it becomes clear that people were less able to express their emotions in that era than they are today. Lots of feelings were repressed, making relationships sometimes strained and awkward. It also meant that power struggles and anger had to be kept supressed under a veneer of manners and respectability.

ok i read "Emil and Karl" it was a really good read it showed me how kind and how awful people were in those days. It showed me how brave people were, although people could have been murdered for helping these two young orphaned boys people still took them in, gave them shelter, food and drink, a bed to sleep in and a home i cant imagine people being so honourable these days.It was set in the beginning of the second world war and people didnt understand why all these jewish people were being taken away and murdered. People were not allowed to express their true feelings, often people had to pretend to hate their jewish friends even though this made them really upset. These two boys were seperated from their families just like many other children in this time period. Also these two boys have a really close relationship just like stephen and keith from spies. As well as "the remains of the day" and "atonement" there were alot of strained relationships and feelings of anger had to be supressed otherwise it could lead to them being murdered.

The novel that i have read is called Once by Morris Gleitzman. For three years and eight months Felix has lived in a convent orphanage high in the mountains in Poland. But Felix is different from the other orphans. He is convinced his parents are still alive and will come back to get him. When a group of Nazi soldiers come and burn the nuns' books, Felix is terrified that his Jewish, bookseller parents will also be in danger. After escaping from the orphanage, Felix embarks on a long and dangerous journey through Nazi occupied Poland, befriending a little orphan girl called Zelda and a kindly dentist, Barney, who hides and cares for Jewish children. But when the Nazis discover them, Barney makes the ultimate sacrifice for the children. This book is based on a true story. What i like about this novel which is differnet from othe r novels is that at the begin of every chapter it always starts with "Once". there is a various mixs of emotions expressed in this novel however it is plainly described also in this novel it shows the anger in power between the charatcers.

The novel I read was "The diary of Anne Frank"

Bit boring, repetitive but written with expression and emotion.

You go through a journey with the young Anne who blossoms and transforms into quite the typical teenager (apart from shes stook in a house)

I felt sympathy for her to be honest, she sounds like me in parts (referring to not loving her mother, how her family are close however she does not feel a part of their tight unit)

it's a good book if you're willing to be emotionally drawn into a book. I couldn't put it down :)

it looks at the feelings a person has towards war rather than describing the war itself however it does touch upon rationing, coupons, etc.

A very ill and tired Teya.
